Karla Rodriguez, affectionately known as “Karlita” by her family, was like any other 7-year-old girl living in Las Vegas in the late 1990s. Her parents, who had moved from Michoacan, Mexico, sought a better life and more opportunities for their children. Karla, born on September 29, 1992, was the youngest of four girls. She was adventurous, loved playing outside, riding her bike, and exploring her neighborhood near the Stratosphere.
On October 20, 1999, Karla’s life took a tragic turn. That morning, her mom walked her halfway to John S. Park Elementary School. After school, she played with friends in the neighborhood. At around 7 PM, she went to a friend's house, but when told it was too late to play, she stayed for about 15 minutes before leaving. That was the last time anyone saw Karla.
Karla’s disappearance was immediately taken seriously by her family and the police. Despite their opposite work shifts, her parents began searching when they realized she wasn’t home. The next morning, her school principal alerted the police. A massive search ensued, involving over 100 officers and volunteers. They went door-to-door, handed out flyers, and searched abandoned buildings, but to no avail.
The Las Vegas Metro Police and the FBI have investigated numerous leads over the years, including interviewing sex offenders in the area and following up on potential sightings. Suspects such as serial killer Curtis Dean Anderson have been considered, but no concrete evidence has surfaced linking anyone to Karla’s disappearance.
Despite the lack of answers, Karla’s family has never given up hope. They still live in the same home, awaiting her return. In 2019, on the 20th anniversary of her disappearance, they participated in a press conference, and her father held Karla’s favorite doll. The family continues to seek closure and justice for Karla, holding onto the hope that someday, they will find her.
